A bracing, claustrophobic psychological drama and a thrilling examination of a deeply complex relationship between two women whose bonds of friendship are fraying.

Catherine has entered a particularly dark period in her life: her father, a famous artist, has recently died, and on the heels of his death she's dumped by her boyfriend James. Looking to recuperate, Catherine heads out to her best friend Virginia's lake house for some much needed relaxation. However, once Catherine arrives relaxation proves impossible to find, as she is overcome with memories of time spent at the same house with James the year before. As Catherine reaches out to Virginia with attempts at connection, Virginia begins spending increasing amounts of time with a local love interest, Rich, and fissures in the relationship between the two women begin to appear, sending Catherine into a downward spiral of delusion and madness. In talking about Philip for so long I started realizing things about it, and wondered if I could make a movie that doesn't deal with any of these issues of being a young man and how great would it be to make a movie where the first question I'm asked isn't, 'Is the main character based on you?'" Freddy is an artist whose desire for a baby has become something of an obsession. He surrounds himself with photographs of his childhood and is working feverishly on a fresh piece about newborns. He and his partner Mo have even managed to persuade their best friend Polly to have their baby. However, after numerous failed attempts to conceive, this proves to be more difficult than they first envisaged. Freddy’s planned video installation also turns out to be rather more complicated than he thought. And then, when the ‘Bishop’, their rather deranged neighbour, begins tormenting them with his serious chicanery, their hitherto carefree existence starts to go dangerously awry. A series of surprising events brings their frustrations to a head and before long, Freddy and his friends begin to lose their grip on reality.

Sebastián Silva’s savagely satirical film is an angry portrait of a group of presumptuous and self-absorbed bohemians. The director himself plays the role of Freddy, infusing his performance with the complacency, doggedness, ignorance and egomania of a social circle which is in the process of becoming estranged from their original visions and dreams. The film serves as Garrone's English-language debut and will interweave three separate story strands bookended by brief bits in which Italians Alba Rohrwacher and Massimo Ceccherini will play a street circus family. In one tale Salma Hayek will play a jealous queen who forfeits her husband's life. In another, Vincent Cassel plays a king whose passion is stoked by two mysterious sisters.

An Italian-led production with co-producers in France and the United Kingdom, the film is Garrone's first English-language film. It competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

It is a screen adaptation based on collections of tales by Neapolitan poet and courtier Giambattista Basile: Pentamerone or Lo cunto de li cunti (Tale of Tales, or Entertainment for Little Ones), which contains the earliest versions of famous fables like Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella.

According to Matteo Garrone, he was drawn to Giambattista Basile's stories for their mix of the real and the unreal, and because he found the themes in many of them to still be highly relevant. Garrone had previously been best known for employing a naturalist style in films such as Gomorrah, but argued that all his previous films also have a fairytale aspect to their narratives. Kot vsaka mati tudi Ma požrtvovalno skrbi za Jackovo srečo in varnost, daje mu toplino in ljubezen, igrata se, pripoveduje mu zgodbice. Vendar je njuno življenje vse prej kot običajno – ujeta sta v 3 x 3 metrski sobi brez oken, ki jo Ma olepšano imenuje »soba«. V njej je za Jacka ustvarila celo vesolje, in nič je ne bo ustavilo, da bi poskrbela, da bo njen sin živel popolno in srečno – pa četudi zgolj v tem varljivem prostorčku. A Jack je čedalje bolj radoveden glede tega, kako in kje živita, Ma pa počasi primanjkuje iznajdljivosti, zato skujeta drzen načrt za pobeg, ki ju na koncu sooči s tistim, kar se morda izkaže za najbolj strašljivo: z resničnim svetom.

Film je hkrati napeta pripoved o ujetništvu in svobodi, domiseln pogled v čudesa otroštva in globok portret trdnosti družinskih vezi; nastala je na podlagi nagrajene knjižne uspešnice Emme Donoghue, ki je spisala tudi scenarij, po katerem je režiral Lenny Abrahamson in ki ostaja zvest romanu, pri tem pa Jacka, Ma in njun edinstveni svet na platnih oživlja v napetem ritmu in silovitih podobah. ROOM tells the extraordinary story of Jack, a spirited 5-year-old who is looked after by his loving and devoted mother. Like any good mother, Ma dedicates herself to keeping Jack happy and safe, nurturing him with warmth and love and doing typical things like playing games and telling stories. Their life, however, is anything but typical--they are trapped--confined to a windowless, 10-by-10-foot space that Ma has euphemistically named Room. Ma has created a whole universe for Jack within Room, and she will stop at nothing to ensure that, even in this treacherous environment, Jack is able to live a complete and fulfilling life. But as Jack's curiosity about their situation grows, and Ma's resilience reaches its breaking point, they enact a risky plan to escape, ultimately bringing them face-to-face with what may turn out to be the scariest thing yet: the real world.
