Lee se mora zdaj vrniti v domači Manchester ob morju, na katerega ga vežejo tako lepi kot boleči spomini. Nenavaden par se mora na hitro spoprijateljiti in sproti reševati vsakdanje težave.

She’s marvelous with personalities, mastering a way with small details and naturalistic interactions, finding tension in unexpected places. “Certain Women” plays to Reichardt’s strengths, working through three tales of attachment and negotiation, creating intimate spaces with fascinating people. Few contemporary filmmakers can do quite as much with quiet as Kelly Reichardt. Superficially empty soundscapes are layered so intricately with the rustle of nature, the brooding of weather and the breathing of preoccupied people that her films come to seem positively noisy to a sympathetic ear. So it is in the marvelous “Certain Women,” where the storytelling has a similarly latent impact. Separating the spare narratives of several disparate Montana women — a morally stressed lawyer, a nest-building mother, a lonely ranch hand — waiting indefinitely for their worlds to fall into place, it’s a peculiarly riveting examination of the lives lived when even their owners aren’t looking. Crafted with Reichardt’s customary calico-textured beauty and expertly performed by such hand-picked ensemble players as Kristen Stewart, Michelle Williams and Laura Dern, this unapologetically open-ended slow burn probably won’t convert many viewers to Reichardt’s softly-softly sensibility, but it’s among her richest, most refined works. Dvajset let po filmu Kako sem se prepiral ... moje spolno življenje je Arnaud Desplechin posnel predzgodbo tega prebojnega dela, v osrednjo vlogo pa znova postavil Mathieua Amalrica. 

Paul Dédalus je antropolog, ki se iz Tadžikistana po več letih vrača v Pariz. Na letališču ga ustavijo zaradi težav s potnim listom. Odpeljejo ga v zasliševalno sobo, kjer pa se v njem začne dogajati nekaj drugega, veliko bolj osebnega: srečanje z lastnimi spomini. Tri filmska poglavja se Paul spominja otroštva v Roubaixu, materinih izpadov norosti, najstniških let, potovanja v Sovjetsko zvezo, prijateljev in na koncu še študija v Parizu. Bolj kot česar koli drugega pa se Paul spominja Esther, ki je bila srce njegovega življenja. 

Ko sem začel pisati scenarij za ta film, si sprva nisem zamišljal predzgodbe, samo film o mlajših likih, najstniški film; o tem sem že zelo dolgo sanjal. Ga bom sposoben napisati? V velikih skrbeh sem bil. Potem sem ugotovil, da je pravo vprašanje: 'Bom sposoben pisati za igralce, ki še nikoli niso stali pred kamero?'
