SAVING MR. WU is an action-packed crime thriller based on the true story of China's famous celebrity kidnapping case. Mr. Wu is kidnapped in Beijing by Zhang Hua and three accomplices, all disguised as cops. In the ensuing 20 hours, the Chinese detectives led by Chief Xing quickly form a task force and sweep the city. Time is of the essence though as Mr. Wu is ordered to be killed at 9pm regardless of whether the money is collected or not. The police eventually apprehend Hua alone and a dangerous mental showdown develops between police interrogators and Hua. As the deadline rapidly approaches, the detectives and captors collide in a dramatic battle.

Though it’s largely a standard police procedural, Ding sends Saving Mr. Wu’s narrative jumping through time — from the "present" where Zhang is being interrogated 18 hours after Wu is snatched off the street, to other kidnappings weeks before and to the timescape of Wu’s captivity. In stitching all these threads together, Ding goes full Paul Greengrass, with an over-abundance of handheld shaky-cam and jagged editing (which might give Michael Bay a headache) that often makes it hard to figure out what’s going on. Mr. Wu moves at lightning speed, barely stopping to catch its breath as the police make one connection after another (if nothing the film is a paean to the efficacy of Beijing’s finest, a bureau of which is credited as co-producing) and the script drops plot points in seemingly at random. Potem ko ga je zapustila punca, se leni črnuh Rell (Peele) na domačem kavču zadeva in utaplja obup v samopomilovanju. Njegov prijatelj Clarence (Key), najbolj rahločutni zamorski nerd in geek, kar jih je videl svet hiphopa (njegov najljubši pevec je George Michael), ima prav tako težave s soprogo, ki ga ima za preveč neodločenega, pretirano medlega in ne dovolj možatega. Vsaj prvemu povrne samozavest in vero simpatičen sivo progast mucek, ki se pojavi na njegovem pragu. Keanu's absurd premise and compulsively watchable starring duo add up to an agreeably fast-paced comedy that hits more than enough targets to make up for the misses.

Magallanes was his subordinate.

One day a woman enters Magallanes' cab. Celina (Magaly Solier) doesn't recognize Magallanes, but he remembers her very well. Many years ago, Celina was a sexual plaything for the Colonel, who kidnapped the young indigenous girl and held her captive in a hotel room for an entire year. Magallanes has a photograph to prove this — a photo he can use to blackmail the Colonel's affluent son (Christian Meier). But can this aging cabbie suddenly transform himself into an extortionist? Or is Magallanes, still in love with Celina after all these years, in over his head?

Based on Alonso Cueto's novel La Pasajera, Magallanes is the story of a terrible secret and its long-term effects on the lives of two people trapped in their own socio-economic chokeholds. In his directorial debut, Peruvian actor Salvador del Solar — whom Festival audiences saw last year in The Vanished Elephant — employs an engaging combination of moody atmospherics and efficient storytelling. Yet, given del Solar's prestigious background as an actor, it is no surprise that his film's deepest impressions are made by its international cast: Luppi, the beloved Argentine most famous for starring in Guillermo Del Toro's Cronos; Solier, who imbues the tormented Celina with dignity, delivering the film's devastating climactic speech in her native Quechua; and, of course, Alcázar, one of Mexico's greats, here giving one of the most movingly vulnerable performances of his career. Along the way, they pick up a sassy runaway and a mother-to-be who help test the pair’s survival skills outside of their calculated existence as they come to understand the importance of hope and true friendship.

Indie-comedy cliches get a crowdpleasing workout in “The Fundamentals of Caring,” as a grieving father, a teen with a rare disease, a foul-mouthed former child star and a quirk-filled road trip all add up to what would’ve been among the hottest titles at Sundance 2004. Solid performances and some genuinely sharp humor elevate writer-director Rob Burnett’s second feature, but the theatrical market isn’t what it used to be for this kind of product. Already acquired by Netflix for SVOD in a pricey pre-fest pick-up, that venue sounds like the best bet to connect with audiences.(Geoff Berkshire, Variety)

Loosely inspired by the events that led to the suicide of police prosecutor Cristian Panait, Why Me? takes on the thorny issue of corruption in Romania, which saw the country’s prime minister and Ceausescu’s secret service Securitate neatly co-opted into the state security service, the SRI. Like an Indian rope trick indeed. Changing the put-upon hero’s name to Panduru, Tudor Giurgiu’s intention is clear, gradually revealing the Pandora’s Box exposed by the police prosecutor when he’s put on a no-win case to investigate a corrupt court judge – a thorn in the side of his even more corrupt seniors. Rather than a tense, labyrinthine thriller, De Ce Eu? emerges as a moody drama of who-to-trust paranoia, betrayal and bribes. And while it’s a worthy tribute to a man who finds himself unable to play along and an important piecing together of the skeletons in the Romanian government’s newly renovated closets, Why Me? remains a rather detached and long-winded depiction of a man in crisis. It’s a great performance from Emilian Oprea as Panduru – a powerful man reduced to a nervous wreck. But with a script that doesn’t quite get under the skin of his decisions not to collaborate or to commit suicide, Why Me? isn’t quite the damning body of evidence it should be. (Mark Wilshin, Dog And Wolf)

Luna is a fantasy film about reality that uses cinematic imaginative language to portray the tangible and mundane alongside the fantastical and fleeting elements of life. The film combines live action with the unique animation and graphics of Dave McKean.

Luna is, without a doubt, one of the most evocative cinematic works of the year. It is refreshingly original in both narrative and form, offering a hard-hitting exploration of grief. The film utilizes storytelling traditions that incorporate symbolism and mythology in order to explore the pitfalls of growing older and finally taking responsibility. If he hadn’t already made a Prohibition-era Western called “Lawless,” director John Hillcoat might as well have saved that title for “Triple 9,” a modern-day heist thriller of unusually grim, coiled intensity: About as far removed as possible from the suave leisure-suit larcenists of an “Ocean’s Eleven” caper, the desperate crooks trying to pull off one last job here are a bunch of corrupt cops and ex-soldiers in Atlanta, navigating a shadowy urban labyrinth with no chance of escape or redemption in sight. Well suited to Hillcoat’s gifts for low-boil suspense and brutal eruptions of violence in close, male-dominated quarters, the film has grit and atmosphere to burn but also a certain narrative sketchiness, as though unable to reconcile its sharp sociological portraiture with the pleasures of a more robustly plotted crime yarn. While a diverse, high-wattage cast including Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet should draw some takers, the Open Road release looks set for a minor killing at best. Evropska znanstvenika že štirideset let potujeta po amazonskem pragozdu v iskanju svete rastline, ki bi ju lahko ozdravila. Tam naletita na Karamakateja, amazonskega šamana, zadnjega preživelega predstavnika svojega ljudstva. Iz tega odnosa se splete epska pripoved o zbliževanju, izdaji ter postopoma tudi o neomajnem prijateljstvu med šamanom in raziskovalcema. Navdih za film so bili dnevniki prvih raziskovalcev kolumbijske Amazonije, Theodorja Koch-Grunberga in Richarda Evansa Schultesa.

Nepričakovano prijateljstvo med amazonskim šamanom in evropskima raziskovalcema v najbolj odročnih kotičkih kolumbijskega pragozda.


Potovanja vetra je bil zelo oseben film o osebnih vprašanjih – družini, kulturi, identiteti. Za naslednji projekt sem se želel odpraviti na potovanje v neznano! Kolumbijcu ni nič bolj neznanega kot Amazonija – prekriva polovico države, vendar o njej vemo le malo. Želel sem spoznavati nove zamisli. V tem procesu sem odkril dnevnike prvih raziskovalcev kolumbijske Amazonije, ki so me popolnoma prevzeli in mi ponudili zgodbo, iz katere sem izhajal. (Ciro Guerra)

At once blistering and poetic, the ravages of colonialism cast a dark shadow over the South American landscape in EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT, the third feature by Ciro Guerra. Filmed in stunning black-and-white, SERPENT centers on Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, and the two scientists who, over the course of 40 years, build a friendship with him. The film was inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers (Theodor Koch-Grünberg and Richard Evans Schultes) who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of the sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic Yakruna plant.

V univerzitetnem kampusu nekje v Teksasu v zgodnjih osemdesetih letih spremljamo člane fakultetnega baseball moštva, glavne frajerje na faksu, medtem ko krmarijo med svobodo in odgovornostmi, ki jih prinaša porajajoča se odraslost. Toda do začetka novega študijskega leta manjkajo še trije dnevi in pol. Zdaj je čas za minljive radosti študentskih let, čas za popivanje, veseljačenje in razuzdane bakanalije.

Žurerska komedija z malo baseballa in veliko piva v režiji ameriškega kronista čudovite vsakdanjosti se začne tam, kjer so se sklenila Fantovska leta. Toda hkrati so Ta nora 80a »duhovno nadaljevanje« Linklaterjeve kultne klasike Zadeti in zmedeni (1993), ki zamenja sedemdeseta za osemdeseta in srednješolsko negotovost za bežen, a slasten občutek nepremagljivosti, ki zaznamuje zgodnja študijska leta.


Ker se večina mojih filmov odvija v omejenem časovnem okviru, se je zelo lahko vračati k likom. To bi lahko počel tako rekoč z vsem, kar sem kdaj posnel. In tudi sicer to velja za mnogo filmov. Vprašanje je le, zakaj to početi. Kakšno zgodbo lahko poveš o teh ljudeh, da bo dovolj zanimiva in ne bo zgolj tržni trik? Ta film je moj najboljši približek nadaljevanja [filma Zadeti in zmedeni]. In ker gre hkrati za nekakšno nadaljevanje Fantovskih let, se sprašujem, ali lahko en film predstavlja dve stvari hkrati, ali je lahko nadaljevanje dveh različnih filmov? Zame je postal predvsem avtobiografska pripoved o tistem trenutku, ko odideš na faks. /…/ Med snemanjem zadnjega prizora Fantovskih let sem igralcem razlagal, da imam zamisel za film, ki se začne natanko v trenutku, ko protagonisti odidejo študirat, in takrat sem upal, da bom lahko film tudi posnel. Zanimivo je, da brez Fantovskih let tega filma najbrž ne bi bilo. Med njima obstaja vez, ki je skoraj tako močna kot povezava s filmom Zadeti in zmedeni. Porajati sta se začela v istem času. Ta nora 80a sem imel v mislih od začetka novega tisočletja; v istem obdobju, ko sem snemal Fantovska leta, sem tudi pisal in predeloval ta film. Hecno je, da si na koncu natanko sledita, kot bi bil drugi nadaljevanje prvega. Ellar iz Fantovskih let predstavlja boljšo plat mojega značaja, Jake pa je tisti bolj veseljaški, ekstrovertiran, zabaven tip. /…/ Ta film bi ne mogel biti bolj neodvisen, pa vendar gre za Paramount! Pri tem, kdo film financira in kakšen je dogovor, ne delam razlik. Bistveno je, kaj potrebuje zgodba, kakšen je obseg in kakšen hoče film postati. He’s no Vincente Minnelli in the visual storytelling department, but no 21st-century filmmaker has a more intuitive understanding of movie-musical construction than Irishman John Carney. After “Once” and “Begin Again” both beautifully unpacked the narrative nature of the songwriting process, he’s back at it with an added dose of 1980s childhood nostalgia in “Sing Street,” a heart-melting adolescent romance that gives teenage garage bands everywhere a better name. Perched on a tricky precipice between chippy kitchen-sink realism and lush wish-fulfilment fantasy, this mini-“Commitments” gets away with even its cutesiest indulgences thanks to a wholly lovable ensemble of young Irish talent and the tightest pop tunes — riffing on Duran Duran and the Cure with equal abandon and affection — any gaggle of Catholic schoolboys could hope to write themselves. Noah je pisatelj in predava na newyorški šoli, s Helen je poročen že več kot 17 let in prišel je na otok, kjer naj bi poletje preživel na posestvu Helenine družine. Tam spozna Alison, mlado natakarico, ki so bori z vsakodnevnim življenjem, nič kaj lažje pa ji ni v zakonu s Colom, ki se trudi obdržati družinski ranč. Noah in Alison začneta zvezo, ki bo spremenila življenja vseh vpletenih.

At once deeply observed and intriguingly elusive, The Affair explores the emotional effects of an extramarital relationship. Noah is a New York City schoolteacher and budding novelist with a wife of twenty years and four children. Alison is a young waitress and wife from Montauk at the end of Long Island, trying to piece her life back together in the wake of a tragedy. The provocative drama unfolds separately from multiple perspectives, using the distinct memory biases of each character to tell the story.

Ko se film začne, se ne boste spomnili prav ničesar. Predvsem zato, ker vas je ravnokar od mrtvih obudila vaša soproga (Haley Bennett). Pove vam, da vam je ime Henry. Pet minut pozneje na vas streljajo, vašo ženo pa ugrabijo, in po vsej verjetnosti bi jo morali iti rešit. Kdo jo je ugrabil? Ime mu je Akan (Danila Kozlovsky), mogočen mafijec je s celo vojsko plačancev, in namenil se je prevzeti nadzor nad vsem svetom. Poleg tega se potikate v povsem neznanem mestu – v Moskvi – in vsi bi radi, da bi bili mrtvi. Vsi razen skrivnostnega britanskega možakarja po imenu Jimmy (Sharlto Copley)… ki je morda na vaši strani, ampak prepričani pa tudi niste.

Hardcore Henry seems poised to reinvent the action flick, but without a story or characters worth caring about, its first-person gimmick quickly loses its thrill.

The cinema’s consummate chronicler of a China evolving so rapidly that its own citizens can scarcely keep apace, Jia Zhangke strikes a particularly melancholic chord in “Mountains May Depart,” a polymorphous snapshot of 21st-century capitalism and its discontents that also finds the filmmaker, like several of his characters, venturing for the first time outside of his home turf and mother tongue. Following a single family as it is tossed about by time, tide and the onward march of progress over the span of a quarter-century, Jia’s latest feature addresses a host of pet themes through a less quirky, stylized lens than 2013’s gruesomely violent “A Touch of Sin” or 2006’s “Still Life” (with its condemned buildings blasting off like rocket ships). But if “Mountains” feels a touch schematic at times, and awkward in its third-act English-language scenes, the cumulative impact is still enormously touching, highlighted by Jia’s rapturous image-making and a luminous central performance by the director’s regular muse (and wife), Zhao Tao. Barney is a hapless barber, devoid of charm and 'patter' as his fellow barbering brethren mockingly remind him. Barney's mediocre, mundane life of plotting for a way up is about to be transformed, following a typically incompetent fit of pique, when he inadvertently stumbles into serial murder, and with it headlong into the trail of a grotesque series of killings gripping Glasgow. As he makes ham-fisted attempts to cover his tracks, he finds himself on the run from the bearish Detective Inspector Holdall and a testosterone-driven local Police task force at each others throats over the ongoing crimes. With his sanity threatening to unravel, Barney fatefully turns to his domineering, emasculating mother, the formidable Glaswegian 'good-time girl', Cemolina. There's no turning back now and the path that lies ahead for Barney may yet be littered with more murderous consequences than he could have ever anticipated.

The title may be “The Legend of Barney Thomson,” but it’s the protagonist’s near-namesake, Emma Thompson, who earns all the glory in Scottish star Robert Carlyle’s amiably uneven directorial debut. Drawn from the off-kilter comic novels of Douglas Lindsay, this grisly farce finds the helmer giving himself a generous showcase as the eponymous chump, a socially inept barber who quite accidentally becomes a modern-day Sweeney Todd. Still, it’s Thompson’s frayed, frightening turn as his unexpectedly devious mother that gives a salty kick to an otherwise minor diversion, in which simple twists of fate are as thickly matted as the characters’ Glaswegian brogues. A crowd-pleasing curtain-raiser for this year’s Edinburgh fest, “Barney Thomson” is unlikely to secure legendary status beyond Caledonia, but ancillary prospects are solid enough.

...mlada pisateljica Maddie (soscenaristka Kate Siegel), ki v odmaknjeni koči sredi gozdne idile sama išče navdih za dokončanje svojega najnovejšega kriminalnega romana (pri tem koleba med kar sedmimi mogočimi epilogi), je zaradi prebolelega meningitisa v rani puberteti namreč trajno gluhonema. Ne sliši, kaj se dogaja okrog nje, in se mora za vsakdanje udobje zanašati na lastno iznajdljivost, občutek prostora in nekatere sodobne pripomočke. (Koncept prikliče v spomin sijajni psihotriler Wait Until Dark iz leta 1967 s slepo junakinjo Audrey Hepburn.) Morilski psihopat (John Gallagher Jr. v zase neznačilni vlogi), ki začne oblegati hišo, je zato v bistveni prednosti; vendar je moški z lovskim samostrelom ne bo kar naravnost ubil, temveč se bo z njo sprva poigral kot mačka z mišjo. In this heart-pounding thriller from acclaimed writer and director Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Before I Wake), silence takes on a terrifying new dimension for a young woman living along in the woods. Author Maddie Young (Kate Siegel) lives a life of utter isolation after losing her hearing as a teenager. She's retreated form society, living in seclusion and existing in a completely silent world. But one night, the fragile world is shattered when the masked face of a psychotic killer appears in her window. Without another living soul for miles, and with no way to call for help, it appears that Maddie is at the killer's mercy... but he may have underestimated his prey. As this horrifying game of cat and mouse escalates to a breathless fever- pitch, Maddie must push herself beyond her mental and physical limits in order to survive the night.

Once the premise kicks into high gear, "Hush" reveals itself as a finely craved one-trick pony. Maddie’s situation doesn’t differ from countless other "final girl" scenarios, and while Gallagher Jr. has fun playing the smarmy murderer eager to toy with his would-be victim, his character barely gets defined enough to register as much more than the market standard for this kind of threat. Still, the real appeal of "Hush" stems from Flanagan’s ability to hover in Maddie’s urgent mindset, and as long as he does that the movie delivers. The expert use of sound design, fused with the Newton Brothers’ energetic score, creates a constant sense of urgency to each scene as it keeps moving forward. The liberal use of bloodshed maintains an enveloping air of danger right down to the tense finale, even if the specific outcome doesn’t offer a lot of new material. (Eric Kohn, IndieWIRE)
