Reading Anna Heinämaa’s script was a wonderfully surreal experience. The story begins with a quiet man teaching fencing to children – a promise of a good story. The script captivated me, and I kept waiting for the story to flatten, never imagining that it could hold that level of fascination. But the story kept its grip on me till the very end. It’s a story with everything a good film needs and a good number of challenges for a director. With all the elements a director could want, a wish entered my mind: Could I get to direct this film? THOUGHTS Director’s This exceptional story was a great foundation for the production and attracted the interest of financiers. The entire crew gave their all, working long days because the story had meaning for each and every one of them. Stories about encounters between children and adults have always interested me. Almost all of us can remember an adult whose presence or words at the right time in our childhood have inspired or given us the crucial nudge in the right direction, helping us to realize a dream or pursue our dream job. I had teachers who encouraged me to make films, and I don’t think I would be a director without them. The core theme of THE FENCER is the role of adults in children’s lives, how adults see children and their interests, and how adults can steer children in the right direction. Casting John Turturro in one of this year's most striking comical roles and coming to terms with the ilness of his mother, the Italian maestro returns to the autobiographical territories that characterised his earlier work.

Margherita, a famous Italian director, is in the midst of her new film and is attempting to contend with Barry Huggins, the main actor - an annoying yet charming American with a penchant for exaggeration. Alongside the pressures on set, she must also deal with her hospitalised mother's deteriorating health and her adolescent daughter. Though her brother Giovanni is helpful and supportive, she quickly realises that it is impossible to separate her personal life from work on set.

"In The Son's Room I was exorcising a fear. Here, I am referring to an experience that many people share. The death of one's mother is an important rite of passage in life, and I wanted to recount it without being sadistic whatsoever towards the audience. /.../ There was just a moment during the writing process when I decided to reread the journal I kept during the course of my mother's illness. I did it because I thought that perhaps our exchanges, those lines could add weight and help the scenes between Margherita and her mother to ring true. Za debelušnega dobrodušneža Fúsija je družabno življenje popolna neznanka, saj je na delovnem mestu nenehno tarča posmeha, zato nima samozavesti, da bi si našel partnerko. Čeprav je dopolnil že 43 let, še vedno živi pri mami in najraje izdeluje makete vojaških bitk. Njegovo življenjsko rutino naposled prekine narobe razumljeno prijateljstvo z 8-letno punčko in nepričakovano vabilo na učne ure plesa. Tam Fúsi spozna prijazno Sjöfn, ki mu počasi zleze pod kožo, toda kot se izkaže, tudi ona skriva številne duševne brazgotine.

Koliko tehta Fúsi, 150 kilogramov ali več? Tega nihče ne ve, niti sam Fúsi ne. 43-letnik namreč živi kot mesečnik. Ne nazadnje, njegovo delo na letališču ni ravno fizično naporno in tudi nikoli ni imel punce. Zanimajo ga le bitke iz druge svetovne vojne, ki jih skrbno rekonstruira s pomanjšanimi modeli tankov in figuricami vojakov. To počne v maminem stanovanju, ki je hkrati njegovo zatočišče in zapor. Nekega dne prejme kupon za plesni tečaj, ki se ga udeleži in tam spozna Sjöfn (Ilmur Kristjánsdóttir), ravno tako osamljeno dušo z globokimi psihološkimi ranami. Fúsi, ki ni prav družaben, se nagonsko odloči, da bo življenja obeh vsaj malo spravil v red. Za tega na prvi pogled ozkoglednega velikana z velikim srcem se to izkaže za kar velik zalogaj. Dagur Kári se potihoma in pazljivo približa svojemu protagonistu, ko razkrije lepote njegovega značaja in prikaže njegovo osvoboditev pred notranjo stagnacijo in zunanjimi pritiski. Kljub žalostnim trenutkom film slavi nepredstavljiva presenečenja vsakega posameznika.

Film je na festivalu Tribeca prejel nagrade za najboljši film, najboljšega igralca in najboljši scenarij.

With subtle humour, Dagur Kári tenderly gets close to his protagonist, revealing the beauty of Nordic character, and describing his emancipation from internal stagnation and external constraints. 

43-year-old Fúsi is sleepwalking through life. His work as an airport baggage handler does not exactly stretch him and he has never had a girlfriend. The only thing that really interests him are World War II battles, which he painstakingly reconstructs using small model tanks and soldiers at home, in his mother's flat which is both his refuge and his prison. Unused to interacting with other people, one day Fúsi receives a coupon for a dance school, which changes his life completely. Is Fúsi actually ready to enter the world he has ignored for such a long time?
