Based on case studies of former child soldiers, Sékou Traoré's feature finds a young lawyer, Emma Tou (Maimouna N'Diaye), reluctantly accepting to defend a recently captured fugitive in what her boss has dubbed "The Trial of the Century." Determined to ensure her defendant sees a fair trial amid the media circus, Emma visits the chilling Blackshouam Vila (brilliantly played by Fargass Assandé in a performance reminiscent of The Silence of the Lambs) and works to earn his trust to break his self-imposed silence. As Vila, no longer a child but grown into a grizzled man of middle age, begins to share his history, Emma uncovers the psychological terrors of a youth brainwashed to commit crimes who has grown into a man vacillating between celebrating his atrocities and complaining of his horrific nightmares, haunted by his unfortunate victims. The further Emma digs, the more she finds that implicates government officials in facilitating Vila's murderous rampage. Setting the stage for a showdown in court, Emma is locked in a complicated search for truth in which hero and villain are only shades of gray. Peppermint Candy is a 1999 film, the second from South Korean director Lee Chang-dong. The movie starts with the suicide of the protagonist and uses reverse chronology to depict some of the key events of the past 20 years of his life that led to his death. It was the ninth highest grossing domestic film of 2000 with 311,000 admissions in Seoul.

It was received well, especially in film festivals. Spurred by the success of Lee Chang-dong's directorial debut, Green Fish, Peppermint Candy was chosen as the opening film for the Pusan International Film Festival in its first showing in 1999. It won multiple awards at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and won the South Korean cinema industry's Grand Bell Awards for best film of 2000.

Olja je srednješolska učiteljica zgodovine, poročena s slikarjem, čigar zadnja razstava je sprožila nasilen odziv srbskih nacionalistov. Neke noči Oljo prav zaradi te razstave napade skupina zamaskiranih huliganov, ki dogodek posnamejo in ga objavijo na YouTubu. Naslednjega dne Olja odkrije, da krivec za napad sedi v njenem razredu. Učencem vzhičena zaseže mobilnike in jih zaklene v šolo, kjer nimajo dostopa ne do šolskih telefonov ne do interneta. V tisti noči se generacija, ki je bila odpisana, še preden je sploh dobila priložnost, o sebi in svojih sošolcih nauči več, kot bi si lahko mislili.

Olja is a high school history teacher, married to a painter whose latest exhibition provoked violent reactions from Serbian nationalists. One night, a group of masked hooligans attacks her. They film the attack and upload the clip to YouTube. The next day Olja discovers that some of her students were responsible. She takes away their mobile phones, and in the heat of the moment decides to lock them in the school building, also disconnecting the school phones and the internet. In order to solve the problem together, and with inability to leave the school, students begin to communicate.
